He was born into a noble family near Siena in Italy. An orphan, he was raised by his uncle. Very gifted, he made scholarly studies. Very pious, he belongs to a brotherhood of prayer. His charity finds full expression during the plague epidemic that ravages the city in 1400. He is 20 years old and such is his devotion that he is entrusted with the provisional management of the hospital. Two years later, he entered the Franciscans, became a priest there and his prior gave him the charge of preaching. This will now be his main vocation. Saint Bernardine travels all over Italy, preaching in public squares because the churches are too small. Sometimes it is thousands of people who crush to hear him and who hear him perfectly despite the thickness of the crowd, his voice is so strong. He speaks in a concrete, direct, alert way, insisting on the Christian life and on the absolute primacy of Christ. Mystical life, moral life and social life are, with him, inseparable. He will also have an important role in the transformation of the Franciscan order known as the "reform of observance".
