8 août, Saint Dominique de Guzman. Fondateur de l'Ordre des Frères prêcheurs (✝ 1221)
Le troisième fils de Félix de Guzman était un curieux étudiant à l'Université de Palencia en Espagne. La famine désolant la ville, il vendait ses livres pour secourir les pauvres. Tout saint Dominique est inscrit dans ce geste : étudier est une bonne chose, mais le souci des hommes est premier. Devenu chanoine régulier d'Osma en Vieille-Castille, il accompagne son évêque Diègue en voyage et c'est en traversant le midi de la France que tous deux sont frappés par les ravages de l'hérésie des cathares. Diègue et Dominique vont à Rome et obtiennent du pape Innocent III la mission de parcourir, avec quelques compagnons, les régions concernées et d'y prêcher l'Evangile par la parole et par l'exemple. La pauvreté évangélique et l'entrain joyeux caractérisent ces prédicateurs. Ils vont deux par deux, prêchant et mendiant leur nourriture. Saint Dominique s'appuie sur la prière du monastère de Prouilhe, près de Fanjeaux, où il a rassemblé quelques "parfaites" cathares converties. Afin de poursuivre et étendre son œuvre de prédication, il réunit ses premiers compagnons dans un couvent de Toulouse dans le même souci de radicale pauvreté. Le pape Honorius III approuve en 1216 son œuvre qui devient l'Ordre des Frères prêcheurs. Dès l'année suivante, ils les dispersent dans toute l'Europe afin d'y fonder des couvents. Il meurt d'épuisement à Bologne.

Félix de Guzman's third son was a curious student at the University of Palencia in Spain. Famine devastating the city, he sold his books to help the poor. Everything about Saint Dominic is inscribed in this gesture: studying is a good thing, but the concern for men is primary. Having become canon regular of Osma in Old Castile, he accompanied his bishop Diègue on a trip and it was while crossing the south of France that both were struck by the ravages of the Cathar heresy. Diègue and Dominique go to Rome and obtain from Pope Innocent III the mission to travel, with some companions, the regions concerned and to preach the Gospel there by word and example. Evangelical poverty and joyful enthusiasm characterize these preachers. They go two by two, preaching and begging their food. Saint Dominic relies on the prayer of the monastery of Prouilhe, near Fanjeaux, where he gathered some "perfect" Cathar converts. In order to continue and extend his work of preaching, he brought together his first companions in a convent in Toulouse with the same concern for radical poverty. In 1216, Pope Honorius III approved his work, which became the Order of Friar Preachers. From the following year, they dispersed them throughout Europe in order to found convents there. He died of exhaustion in Bologna.
