Seventy or septante?

Why in Switzerland or Belgium do we say septante?

Or why do the French say Seventy?

For its numbers, France partly uses the vicesimal system which is based on the number 20.

This system was first used by pre-Columbian civilizations in America such as the Aztecs and Mayans.

It was also in force in our country among the ancient Celts and Gauls who, in addition to using their ten fingers to count, also used their ten toes.

10 + 10 = 20

This vicesimal system was very widespread in medieval Europe before gradually disappearing to be replaced by a system based on the number 10 which is the most used today.

French, the only Latin language with this characteristic, results from a mixture of these two systems with the presence of the system of 10 (one says « sixty » and not « three-twenty ») and the system of 20 (with « quatre- twenty” rather than “octante”).

Soixante-dix; septante; système vicésimal; base 10. Seventy; septante; vicesimal system; base 10.
