Quand le 16e arrondissement de Paris…

Refusa d’être le 13^e…

Avant l’annexion des “Faubourgs” de Paris en 1860 (Bercy, Montmartre, Auteuil, Vaugirard, Charonne…), la capitale ne comptait que 12 arrondissements. Pendant les grands travaux d’Haussmann la capitale s’agrandit et annexe plusieurs villages alentours, passant alors de 12 à 20 arrondissements. Selon le découpage en vigueur à l’époque, le n°13 doit être attribué aux chics bourgades de l’ouest sur les territoires d’Auteuil et Passy. Cependant les habitants s’y refusent fermement.

En effet, si le 13 est considéré depuis longtemps comme un nombre « porte-malheur » par la plupart des gens… Ce n’est pas la seule explication ! A Paris, qui ne comptait que 12 arrondissements, on se moquait des couples en concubinage desquels on disait qu’ils étaient « mariés à la mairie du 13^e » : c’est-à-dire non mariés puisqu’elle n’existait pas !

Le 13e arrondissement sera donc donné à une zone historiquement pauvre, aux alentours de Saint-Marcel. Et finalement aujourd’hui tout le monde est fier de son arrondissement…

Before the annexation of the “Faubourgs” of Paris in 1860 (Bercy, Montmartre, Auteuil, Vaugirard, Charonne…), the capital had only 12 arrondissements. During Haussmann's major works, the capital grew and annexed several surrounding villages, going from 12 to 20 arrondissements. According to the division in force at the time, the n°13 must be attributed to the chic western towns on the territories of Auteuil and Passy. However, the inhabitants firmly refuse to do so.

Indeed, if 13 has long been considered an “unlucky” number by most people… This is not the only explanation! In Paris, which had only 12 arrondissements, people laughed at cohabiting couples who were said to be "married at the town hall of the 13th arrondissement": that is to say, not married since it did not exist!

The 13th arrondissement will therefore be given to a historically poor area, around Saint-Marcel. And finally today everyone is proud of their district…
