22 août, Saint Symphorien d'Autun. Martyr (III^e siècle)

Saint Symphorien, jeune martyr décapité au III^e siècle, un jeune martyr né à Autun, ville encore païenne située sur une grande voie romaine. Son père saint Fauste, préteur au service du consul romain, et sa mère sainte Augusta l'avaient élevé dans la foi chrétienne.

Refusant de sacrifier à la grande déesse Cybèle, il fut battu, emprisonné puis condamné à mort.

Sur le chemin de son supplice et jusqu'au dernier moment, sa mère l'encouragea du haut des remparts d'Autun à rester ferme dans sa foi lui disant notamment : "Courage mon fils ! Ta vie ne te sera pas enlevée ; elle te sera échangée contre une vie meilleure."

Il fut décapité dans sa vingtième année.

On fête également les Siegfried et les Fabrice.

Saint Symphorien, a young martyr beheaded in the 3rd century, a young martyr born in Autun, a still pagan city located on a great Roman road. His father Saint Fauste, praetor in the service of the Roman consul, and his mother Saint Augusta had brought him up in the Christian faith.

Refusing to sacrifice to the great goddess Cybele, he was beaten, imprisoned and then sentenced to death.

On the way to his ordeal and until the last moment, his mother encouraged him from the top of the ramparts of Autun to remain firm in his faith saying to him in particular: "Courage my son! Your life will not be taken away from you; it will will be exchanged for a better life."

He was beheaded in his twentieth year.
