May 23, 1618, The defenestration of Prague
in 1618 Took place in the castle of Prague, it marks the paroxysm of the revolt of the nobles of Bohemia against the monarchy of the Habsburgs, which for a century had been established at the head of this kingdom. A consequence of the religious, economic and political antagonisms which tore central Europe apart at the beginning of the 17th century, this event was one of the immediate causes of the Thirty Years' War.
On June 6, 1617, Archduke Ferdinand of Styria was elected King of Bohemia. He immediately undertook the large-scale catholization of Bohemia and endeavored to restrict the prerogatives of the Parliaments. These two measures went against the letter of majesty and alienated the new sovereign from the elected chambers.
The insubordination of the Protestant parliamentarians of Bohemia marked time. On May 21, 1618, the rebellious princes met in the Carolinum in Prague, but without representatives from the royal cities. The assembly, peaceful at first, turned into an uproar after Heinrich Matthias von Thurn's speech.
On May 23, 1618, a number of participants held an improvised tribunal and had Slavata and Martinic defenestrated; the two men got off with a few injuries and a good scare. Slavata himself was taken unconscious by his servants.
