Les premières traces de ce sport remonte en 1949, où un article est paru dans un magazine intitulé Mechanix Illustrated. Cependant, c’est dans les années 60 qu’il connaîtra une grande popularité, en particulier dans la région de Puget Sound, au cœur de l’état de Washington. Le célèbre Time magazine écrira même un article sur la popularité croissante de ce sport.
